Urban Deco design for BoxPark Croydon stars
Hailed as one of London’s most cutting-edge boroughs, Croydon's been enjoying a fresh focus with the eagerly-anticipated arrival of hip pop-up mall Boxpark. We’re particularly excited to unveil our latest hospitality design for local young entrepreneurs Wine & Deli, one of the 33 food and drink venues on the site.
Originally conceived in Shoreditch, East London, BoxPark is constructed entirely from refitted shipping containers. The Croydon site, which opened in November, brings together food and drink offerings from established brands - such as Meat Liquor and the Breakfast Club - with independents.
The brainchild of local young entrepreneurs, Adam Jackowski, Tom Yip and Dan Esteban, Wine & Deli harnesses the optimistic vibe sweeping Croydon. Small plates of tapas are served with a carefully curated wine list from across the globe. The artisan food and drink are carefully selected for quality while the experience is all about informality.
To give Wine & Deli the right look and feel, we created a unique Urban Deco look, combining the best of Croydon old and new. The design takes its influences from the celebrated Art Deco buildings of Croydon’s past - such as the former international airport and Purley Way Lido, and the current surge of stunning urban graffiti street art creating a new vibrant open-air gallery.
Wine & Deli’s mix of art deco influences with urban cool sees decorative gold Tom Dixon lights, handmade British Spiral wallpaper by Erica Wakerly and patterned flooring beside a wall of vintage posters with an oversized graffiti art logo. White metro tiles, black tables, bistro chairs and a hot-pink trim complete the look.
As our Creative Director, Evros Agathou explains: “The independents are up against some top name brands in a space like BoxPark so it’s essential they stand out and make an impact. Wine & Deli strikes the right balance between quality and experience, appealing to a discerning yet laid-back crowd.
“The unique mash-up of art deco and urban street fits the brand’s mix of youthful energy with fine food and wine. We loved working with these visionary local lads to create a design that captures the good times and good vibes of Croydon’s ambitious youth.”
The design really hit the spot for our clients too. As Adam Jackowski, co-founder of Wine & Deli said: “Working with Avocado Sweets was an absolute pleasure. We were on the same page throughout the process and the final design far exceeded our expectations.
"Drinking wine and eating cured meats and cheeses is still regarded as a posh thing to do so we wanted a relaxed spot for everyone to try something new. The design is inviting and unpretentious – exactly what we wanted. We can’t wait to work with Avocado Sweets again on a future project!”
