Former school house turned eclectic home
Tailor-made in every detail, this converted Victorian school house apartment is brimming with character and laid-back urban style. Conceived and delivered by London-based interior design studio, Avocado Sweets, the interior mixes industrial fittings with vintage pieces and colourful fixtures, for a spectacular summer vibe.
With a fabulous collection of vintage pieces, the creative homeowners wanted a space to enjoy with family and friends in a comfortable, personal setting.
The heart of this eclectic north London home is a glorious open-plan kitchen where bespoke colander lights in aubergine, tango and lime green pair with a vivid vintage gramophone for a colour injection. Its singular style is completed by the juxtaposition of exposed metal trunking with earthy red-brick walls and a warm up-cycled 1960s oak chest kitchen island.
This fusion continues into the main living room for an elegant, offbeat effect. Three individual coloured floor-to-ceiling curtains dress the substantial windows, while minimalist Plumen low-energy bulbs contrast with paired-back simplicity.
No detail is forgotten. The entrance hall, covered with vintage magazines give a hint of the treasure trove within, while classic penguin book wallpaper from Osborne and Little captivates as you climb the stairs.
Evros Agathou, Creative Director of Avocado Sweets said: “A tailor-made design takes time and a way of communicating that brings the best out of everyone. For this project, the informal chat was as important as the structured meetings to get under the clients’ skin, if not more so. First we had to get the space right, then the design flowed from there. As a creative couple it was essential their home was a reflection of them. To achieve this we went for unique, custom-made pieces, like the kitchen lights and up-cycled kitchen island. Their fabulous collection of vintage pieces were woven into the design and we mixed industrial with earthy, and vintage with new, for a truly bespoke result.”
Charlie (client) said: “Working with Evros and Avocado Sweets was a real pleasure from the get go. We were really pleased with how he worked so hard to understand our vision. He made our house, which started as an open plan apartment, into a home without losing the feeling of space and while making sure our personalities come through in the design. He really listened to our ideas while bringing many of his own which we embraced gladly. We especially loved the fact that he wasn't afraid to think out-of-the-box. Overall, it was a really satisfying and fun experience. There were hurdles but made all the more easy to cross thanks to the skills which Evros brought. The home we have now is everything we dreamed of. Everyday we wake up and feel happy to be living here.”
